Gabriel Stelian Shanks and Nilan are the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director of The Drama League. The renowned non-profit home for stage and film directors is in New York City but their partnership goes even further – as award-winning producers, writers directors, and performers, they also founded the acclaimed production company ‘A Certain Something’, where they have collaborated on over a dozen film, television and theatre projects in the last decade. They are currently at work on their next television series in development, ‘The Recipe’, and they co-host The Drama League’s own podcast, ‘Talking Direction’.

Today on the show we have Ford Sellers who is the Senior Product Development Manager for Chauvet Professional. Chauvet provides lighting equipment across multiple entertainment sectors, including concerts, stage and event productions, touring, theatres, hospitality venues, cruise ships, clubs, houses of worship, television and “archtainment”.
Ford oversees product engineering, technical writing teams and works with the Product Development team to bring new products to market. He also works with the Marketing Department ensuring that all marketing materials are on point and works directly with manufacturing partners to solve technical issues and negotiate prices. His specialties include; moving light programming and control, video integration, theatrical lighting design, purchasing, technical support, education, contract negotiation and marketing.

In this episode we are joined by Theresa Robbins Dudeck and Joel Veenstra talking all things improvisation.
Theresa Robbins Dudeck works globally in both professional and academic settings, applying improvisation to pedagogy, leadership, teamwork, collaborative creation and social change. Dr Dudeck is considered one of the foremost teachers of Keith Johnstone’s impro system – she wrote the critically acclaimed “Keith Johnstone: A Critical Biography”, and is the co-editor of two books on applied improvisation. Theresa is also the co-director and executive producer of the YouTube docu-series “On Keith – Artists Speak on Johnstone and Impro”.
Joel Veenstra is a stage manager, production manager, producer and improviser. He stage manages large-scale celebrity galas and serves at the University of California drama department as the Associate Chair of Production. He is an interdisciplinary expert on the management of productions, resources and people – all through the lens of improvisation. In 2017 Joel founded the Global Improvisation Initiative Symposium at UCI, which has grown year on year, most recently moving fully remote due to the pandemic.
Theresa and Joel talk to us all about their fascinating careers and the power of improvisation in the wider world.

In the lead up to LDI in Las Vegas this November, TheatreArtLife is catching up with some of the companies who are exhibiting at the conference. Today on the show we have Ola Melzig who is one of the founders of Apex Technologies. Apex Technologies was founded this year as the exclusive distributor of high-end entertainment technology solutions and will be exhibiting for the first time at LDI this year.
Ola Melzig is a Swedish producer, most commonly associated with the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Since 2000, Melzig has handled technical production for thirteen ESC finals and was seated as the Stage and Concert producer for two. He has also managed numerous high-profile televised productions including the Nobel Banquet, the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, and the closing ceremony of the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. Other international productions include the 15th IIFA Awards and the 150-year anniversary of Cinco de Mayo in Mexico. He is currently working on the production of the American Song Contest, coming to NBC in 2022.

In this episode we are joined by Christian Epps and Dami Ayorinde talking all things lighting.
Christian Epps is a lighting designer who has spent more than three decades working in major motion pictures, broadcast television, commercials, live theatre, dance, music videos and special events. In 2006 he began designing concerts and television in Nigeria and countries in Africa. Christian recently lit Netflix’s first original African production Queen Sono in Johannesburg and Netflix’s first production in Nigeria. He has worked on projects with notable names such as Nike and LeBron James, Spike Lee, and with Tessa Thompson on Amazon. In 2014 he and others founded Lights, Camera, Diaspora!, which is a Hollywood-based social enterprise non-profit that bridges the gap between the African and African Diaspora entertainment production industries. Since 2015, the company has conducted over 25 workshops and technical masterclasses in 8 countries in Africa. Christian won the Africa Diaspora Awards ‘Creative Person of the Year’ Award in 2017.
Dami Ayorinde is a 19 year old lighting technician from Nigeria who started in the industry as a trainee on a Netflix original with Christian Epps. She has been working actively in lighting departments since then.
Christian and Dami talk to us about their insights on the industry through their interesting perspectives of old and new, and illuminate us about lighting in the world of film and entertainment.

Mario is a juggler, and is responsible for the finance, administration and the programming of cultural activities for the Circus Monti. After more than 15 years as a performer, Mario moved into working behind the scenes, though he plans to be back on stage in November 2021. Mario talks to us about working on both sides of entertainment, and shares insights on performing, the industry in general, and stories from his fascinating career.
